Now that they've met their funding they will need to look for a car. Since OPPO(WILLKINTON247) was integral in this occurring I figure we should help find their next car. I think they should keep to the $5,000 budget regardless of what they make, and spend the rest sensibly for their business(aka sweet mods for new wheels).

I say he find a similar Echo and give the rest to charity. I see no reason he should profit/end up better off cause of an oopsie. Shit happens to a lot of people, and they deal with it like responsible adults.

How about this 2003 Acura TL for 5000? They didn't list the miles but apparently it's in pretty good shape and it's a Honda so it'll take a force of nature to kill the engine or the transmission.

IIRC, those trans' in that model were 'bad'. just like the 2002-07 accords.... However the manual trans' were pretty much bulletproof (again, iirc)

Id stay away from them personally. Plus you'd have to do a Timing belt. So add another grand if you are lucky.

In a way this fundraiser is a way of "thanking" Mr. Regular for the many laughs he provided us with. Sure his fundraiser was in a way to replace his car but now it's our turn to give back. If people want to give, why stop them?

I say this, for a few reasons
1) It's a decently big car. I've gone skiing in a focus with 2 other people (was riding shotgun) and there was enough space for a set of skis (other 2 on the roof) and 3 sets of ski boots! for a C/C trip, this would be great!
2) It's economical. These get good MPG's, especially with the manual! pop it in 5th by 40mph, and you'll be seeing mid-high 30's all day
3) It's sporty. Not fast, but it's set up in such a way that it delivers driving pleasure when poked a bit! these had about 130hp(?) and that's just enough for this hatch!
4) It's reliable. This engine has at least another 40K in it! plus, the lack of electronics helps the reliability of it all!
5) It's regular! you see foci like this every day! it'll fit right in :)

C'mon man, that's sounding pretty harsh....I mean honestly, if people started giving you money, would you turn it down because you saw no reason you should profit?

Harshness was referring to the responsible adults comment btw

He should be making a bit (a very small bit) off of Youtube, but if people feel a chuckle is worth more than what Youtube pays him, then let them donate a dollar. I'm fine with them helping.

But maybe I just have too much pride to ask friends/strangers for help because shit happens. Maybe this will serve as a lesson. If you can't afford to replace your car when shit happens, maybe you should pay that little bit extra for better insurance.

I stand by my statement. If I blew out an old tire by running over a pothole, I wouldn't ask everybody to pool money together for a whole new set of tires... I mean if you really can't afford to replace a 138k mile Echo, you might want to consider comprehensive insurance. How much more per month can that cost on a car that cheap? That's being responsible.

Well, if gmctavish can recomend an old Merc 300 wagon, then I nominate this well preserved relic of days gone by. Room enough for a family of six, their dog and a dead hooker in the trunk. And it looks beautiful. It was the Camry of its day, so of course its beige. http://reading.craigslist.org/cto/4321013656…

You're acting like there aren't people that save as much money as they can. I don't have collision insurance, simply because I can't afford to have my insurance a dollar more than the most basic coverage. But I need a car on the road to get me to work and school, and transit won't do it. Does that make me irresponsible? No, that makes me a broke student.

As an owner of an '01 CL Type S, I know all too well about the auto transmission problems with these things. I'm on my 3rd. First was replaced under warranty and the second popped after 17,000 miles of normal use. Long story short, the 2nd to 3rd gear clutch plates in them were crummy and overheated massively, producing metal shards that would spread through the whole trans and clog up injectors and such. There's a huge analysis on the cl.acurazine.com forums about the official documents from Honda's own testing. Supposedly the transmissions made after mid year 2005 are mostly free of this issue (that's sort of a general consensus on the acurazine forums possibly based on real facts from Honda).

A few guys on the forums swear by transmission fluid flushes every or every other oil change and using the latest official Honda AT fluid (not the old stuff that originally came in the cars), and a few other members swear by a adding a trans cooler. It's generally agreed upon though that these trans' will pop anywhere between 50,000 to 100,000 miles and possibly sooner, if left stock. I wrote up an extended analysis from the megathread about the trans's problems here.

I get it. Save as much as you can. But if saving a few dollars here and there means your screwed when an act of god totals your car, then you gambled and lost. If you can't afford a "dollar more" than you most certainly can't afford anything happening to the car... Hopefully you have some cash to replace it with anything that will get you from point A to B. If not, keep your fingers crossed.

Kinja'd!!! gmctavish needs more space > The Opponaut formerly known as MattP123
02/05/2014 at 23:01

Kinja'd!!!0

I also should've clarified that any accident would total my car even if I had collision insurance, I would definitely have it on a more valuable car. But I digress. I was more trying to draw attention to the accusation of irresponsibility without adequate context, that's all

Kinja'd!!! The Opponaut formerly known as MattP123 > gmctavish needs more space
02/05/2014 at 23:08

Kinja'd!!!0

But again... The reason you would have comprehensive insurance on a "more valuable car" is because it would be quite the financial burden to replace it. If you can eat the loss, then don't bother with comprehensive. If you can't afford to replace it, then comprehensive might be a good idea. It's easier to find a couple extra bucks a month for the coverage than it is to find $2500 if something happens.

02/05/2014 at 23:14

Kinja'd!!!0

No I mean literally any claim would write the car off. The purchase price is too low, I'm just assuming I won't fuck up and wreck the car because I trust my driving. Or, if I do, I'll have saved up more. But yes it is easier to find a couple bucks for the coverage, but here I think it's more like $20 a month, which seems pointless to me because part of every paycheck goes into a repair fund :p
